According to the Dictionnaire Jersiais-Français, trique-marchéthie is "L'action de trique-marchi. So it's a sort of simple obstacle course. At the barbecue evening in Trinity last Friday evening, L'Assembliée d'Jèrriais had a course set out made up of old boxes and stuff.

There was also a game of doque. (There are more pictures of doque being played, at Wikimedia Commons)

New on La Section de la langue Jèrriaise

Fête Nouormande 2008 1
Newly added to the snippets from C19 sources, and as a follow-up to the Chanson Gaspésienne, more North Americana - this time, an extract from travel writing about visiting Saint Helier in Harper's New Monthly Magazine, New York 1858:

Cicerones, who speak a mongrel dialect, will meet you on the quay, and show you where the Royal Hotel invites you, with its bay windows and British Coffee-Room. And with a British coffee-room come British steaks, British muffins (most indigestible of cakes), British chops, and British roast joints. You will hear your host talking what might be French, if it were not an older Norman tongue...

...almost within cannon-shot of France, this little relic of the ancient Norman people - clinging to the Norman tongue and to Norman caps - bade defiance to the navies of France.

Indigenous, Minority and Lesser Used Languages

Indigenous, Minority and Lesser-Used languages was the theme of the last BIC summit meeting held in Jersey in November 2009. At the summit, the Council endorsed the work of the group and added the economic benefits of bilingualism to the group’s remit. An officials meeting was held in Dublin in December 2009, where it was agreed that the UK would lead the work on economic benefits of bilingualism. It was also agreed to establish a sub-group to discuss the European Charter for Minority and Lesser Used Languages that would look at Member Administration’s experiences of the monitoring process, and share best practice on how to monitor progress and report to the Council of Europe. An inaugural meeting of this sub-group was held in Guernsey in June 2010. In February 2010 a seminar was held in Edinburgh by the legislation sub-group to discuss linguistic legislation. This was organised by the Scottish Government, who have chaired the legislation sub-group since it was established.

La Saint Jean - Midsummer

Aniet, ch'est la Saint Jean. It's Midsummer today.

Tchi s'en va finni l'an.

Au supèrmarchi - At the supermarket

In the news today, Waitrose are buying some Jersey and Guernsey supermarkets. The Checkers supermarkets can trace their corporate origin back to the family-run grocers' of the Le Riche family founded in Saint Helier in the early C19th.

Naturally enough, these commercial enterprises have left a record in Jèrriais literature. Georgie recalls the original shop and how the Le Riches expanded in this extract from a longer poem from 1904.

Il' ont des oeux, du beurre, du fronmage, du jambon;
Des oranges, des nouaix, des chucrîns, des poummes, du limon;

The official premier of the documentary “Lé Nièr Beurre: Un R’tûnfîn” / “Black Butter: Tasting the Past”, directed by Daniela Rusowsky and Stephan M. Funk, will take place on Thursday 10th of June at the Jersey Museum

Last year in late October the documentary filmmaker and visual anthropologist Daniela Rusowsky, Director of Funk Productions, worked with the National Trust for Jersey, to film for the first time in professional format the Jersey tradition of Black Butter making. The complete process, including the peeling of the apples, the stirring of the mixture in the bachîn throughout the night, the camaraderie and the jarring up was recorded to capture the essence of this ancient recipe and reveal the spirit of one on Jersey’s best kept secrets: its people.

But filming the event was only the beginning. With the support of Jersey Archive Daniela discovered some very precious and rare footage about black butter making and rural life in Jersey, which complements the film in a journey from the past that looks towards the future.

This filming was edited as a 48 minutes documentary and the soundtrack includes original recordings from traditional Channel Islands music courtesy of SocSercq Museum and Archive and L’Office du Jèrriais.

We have just received the latest issue of the Picard magazine L'Arnitoile - a special double issue (Nos. 189-190) celebrating the anniversary of an association that promotes the language. If you can read Jèrriais, then some Picard (if you squint and concentrate hard) is not all that difficult to read. The latest issue contains regular features and special articles (including the Picard tradition of puppet theatre). More information can be found on the corresponding website:
