While we were manning our stall at the Sark Folk Festival at the beginning of the month, a remark was made to us about the difficulty of tracking down music resources. One resource which may be overlooked is Les Nouvelles Chroniques du Don Balleine. Besides regular publication of Jèrriais songs, issue 1 of volume 3 on the theme of music may be of particular interest.

As usual, the first publications to look at for songs are Original Songs in the Jersey Language and Folksongs of the Channel Islands.

Eune annonche en poésie - en Angliais et Jèrriais - pouor la boutique Lé Vièr Soudard dé 1905.

This 1905 advertisement in verse for The Old Soldier includes a couple of Jèrriais phrases. The shop sign was a red army coat: eune rouoge câsaque.

"Hullo, where are you going, old man?
To "Le Vier Soudard" in New Street, where I can
Buy Clothing that will stand all weathers,
And Boots (not of cardboard) but made of Solid Leather.
Just pay him a visit, take my advice,
You will not hesitate about going twice
To 34, New Street, where the goods they stock
Under the sign of "La Rouoge Casaque."

Following on from the The Jersey Kitchen, here are some culinary observations from a series of articles "Jersey Jottings" published in a Jersey newspaper in 1862.
For the comfort of the driver's postillions' and reapers' "inner men" - if we may use such a term where the other sex is concerned - there is a plentiful supply of a national edible called a "Vraicking biscuit," (Gallette de Vraic). This in form may be said to resemble a Bath bun of Brobdignagian dimensions, or a north country "whig" - with currants just within shouting distance of each other, and no nearer - currants that are exactly like angel's visits, sweet, exceeding limited in numerical strength, and widely dispersed.
