Alice au Pays des Mèrvelles - Alice in Wonderland

Alice par John Tenniel 12Acouo un but d'Alice:

Jèrriais at Cambridge

Jèrriais is an integral part of the course at Peterhouse on the French Language: Variation and Change. In their final year, Cambridge University students study the dialectal divisions of France, including Jersey, Guernsey and Sark.

Dr. Mari Jones presents information on the different vocabulary in Eastern and Western Jèrriais and the accents which are (or were) used in the linguistic pockets around the Island. One lecture compares the numbers and percentages able to use the different forms of Norman. Mainland Normandy has around 17,000 Norman speakers - about 1% of the population, Jersey has 2,874 or 3.2%, Guernsey with 1,327 speakers making up 2.2% and Sark has an estimated 10 speakers (1.7%)- and Alderney has none...

Students are also given information about the special features of the Norman language, with an emphasis on the Islands. They also examine Language policy and Planning, comparing programmes supporting Seselwa, the first official language of the Seychelles, with the States of Jersey's support of Jèrriais, Jersey's official minority language.

La Voix du Donjon

J'avons r'chu l'drein neunmétho d'La Vouaix du Donjon tch'est tout pliein d'belles vaques brîngies Nouormandes. Y'a tchiques mots Nouormands: mielle, vergie (vrégie), melle, cllos (clios), "Ch'est men byin et mei j'y tyins" (ch'est man bein et mé j'y tcheins)...

The latest issue of La Voix du Donjon celebrates the centenary of the Bricquebec agricultural society, with lots of lovely pictures, historical and modern, of brindled Norman cows to illustrate the history of the herd-book and the rural economy.

Francis Boutle Publishers rapportent:

The Toad and the Donkey :
An anthology of Norman Literature from the Channel Islands
Order now: available from 1 April 2011
Special pre-publication price until 21 March: £17.99

Paperback 477 pages
ISBN 978 1903427 61 3

The Toad and the Donkey brings together texts in the Norman languages of the Channel Islands, along with other texts that illustrate the tangled linguistic heritages of what Victor Hugo, in exile in the Islands from 1852 until 1870, called ‘pieces of France fallen into the sea and picked up by England’. In 1066 William the Conqueror and his troops, including Channel Islanders, brought the Norman language to England by force and claim of succession, but in the twenty-first century Norman voices still express the special cultures of these remnants of the Duchy of Normandy.

Journée Întèrnâtionnale d'la Langue Matèrnelle - International Mother Language Day

Aniet ch'est la Journée Întèrnâtionnale d'la Langue Matèrnelle, procliâmée preunmiéthement par l'UNESCO en 1999.

Today is International Mother Language Day, a UNESCO initiative, which has been observed every year since February 2000 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.

All languages are linked through their origins and borrowing, but each is a unique source of meaning for understanding, writing and expressing reality.

Mother languages are special in providing the material with which the world is first voiced, the lens through which it is first understood. International Mother Language Day is a moment to recognize their importance and to mobilise for multilingualism and linguistic diversity.

ClameurdeharoThe recent post on coutumiers reminded us of the poem on the coutume of Jersey in an article (with introduction by Advocate Richard Falle) in the October 2000 issue of the Jersey Law Review (now the Jersey and Guernsey Law Review)

The poem, a sort of attempt at a coutumier in verse, was basically written in French, but some Jèrriais forms appear. One example is in the section on the Clameur de Haro, where French clameur and Jèrriais cliâme appear as required by the demands of the verse.

Charles, Prince of Wales, was proclaimed King in the Royal Square on this day in 1649. Jersey thus recognised the exiled monarch after the execution of his father, Charles I. Here's part of a 1972 article by George d'La Forge on the topic:

Les Célèbres d'Cart'rêts
Et j'peux lus dithe qué les Jèrriais, natifs et habitants d'eune pétite île dé douze milles par six, n'avaient pon d'peux du tèrribl'ye Cromwell, et tch'il' eûdrent lé couothage dé procliâmer l'Prînce Rouai Charles Deux d'Angliétèrre aussitôt tch'il' eûdrent la nouvelle dé l'assasinnâtion d'san p'pèe. Centuries of law in Normandy

The Rechtsgeschiedenis blog brings our attention to legal history with a fascinating post: Centuries of law in Normandy
The medieval customary law of Normandy is still living law on the Channel Islands, especially on Jersey. Willem Zwalve wrote about the use of the old Norman customary law in a case at Jersey from 2001, ‘Snell vs. Beadle. The Privy Council on Roman law, Norman customary law and the ius commune‘, in: “Viva vox iuris romani”: Essays in honour of Johannes Emil Spruit), L. de Ligt (ed.) (Amsterdam 2002) 379-386, available online at the digital repository of the University of Leiden. Usufruitchièrs - Usufructuaries

We are not a lawyer, but we had a call this afternoon about "life enjoyment". L'Office du Jèrriais is not a legal advice service, but people occasionally get confused by the term "Jersey French" and turn to us for help. Interestingly, just like Jèrriais, the French language is perfectly able to distinguish between the Jersey language - le jersiais - and the Jersey dialect of French - le français de Jersey - but the English language, lacking an adjective for Jersey, gets itself in a twist about such straightforward matters. This is why it's much simpler all round to call the Jersey language by its vernacular name - Jèrriais - and refer to the Jersey dialect of French as used in contracts and laws as Jersey Legal French.

Authors and dates

One of the consequences of a literary culture that values self-effacement is that sometimes the biographical details of authors can be overlooked or even lost. Many of our well-regarded writers have hidden behind noms de plume for one reason or another, but this has helped render them more anonymous to a later readership. Part of the process of celebrating our rich literary heritage has been to bring the personalities of Jèrriais writers out of the shadows, and, as with so much, the digital revolution is transforming our knowledge of the past.
